9.10. “Kota Santri” Dillema: The Politics of Citizenship in Post-Soeharto Tasikmalaya

Amin Mudzakkir (LIPI)

Abstract

This paper will examine the politics of citizenship in post-Soeharto Tasikmalaya. Theoretically framed by Nancy Fraser approach of “recognition-redistribution dilemma”, this article will show that welfare politics is marginalized by identity politics in the development of the city. This marginalization is made possible in part by misguided interpretations of the policy of decentralization / local autonomy, which, later on caused confusion on the city’s identity as “kota santri”. Materials for this paper obtained through research documents, literature review, interviews with key informants, and field observations.

Keywords: Citizenship, recognition, redistribution, decentralization, Tasikmalaya
